Crediting her success to family, friends and professors, Gordon State College senior Lisa Amis will inspire her peers as the Class of 2019 Representative at GSC’s 45th year of undergraduate commencement ceremonies Monday.

Amis is a Locust Grove, Ga., native who graduated from Locust Grove High School in 2014. After graduation, she chose to come to GSC to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. “I chose Gordon because I was attracted to the small classrooms which gave me the opportunity to ask questions, participate in discussions, and able to have more contact with my professors.”

While attending GSC Amis was active in the campus life while diligently working towards her degree and maintaining a part-time job. Amis said she loved being a Resident Assistant.

“My best memories were working as an RA. Not only was I able to grow professionally, I grew personally. I met a lot of people that I was able to help, I love seeing other people happy.” Amis was also active in the Student Government Association while working at CVS as a pharmacy technician to gain experience in her field.

“I chose Biology because I like to be hands-on,” she said. “My favorite class was Microbiology with Professor of Biology, Dr. Theresa Stanley. In the class we tested bacteria on doorknobs and in other ‘dirty’ places, it was really fun.”

After graduating from GSC, Amis plans on taking time off before continuing her education in graduate school. During her time off Amis looks forward to spending time with friends and family, playing board games, watching movies and enjoying meals with loved ones.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and it wouldn’t be possible for me to be walking across that stage Monday if it weren’t for people like Dr. Stanley and Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Amanda Duffus. They were my mentors both academically and personally. My favorite thing about Gordon is that you will receive a great education at an affordable price as well as finding professors that want to see you succeed.”

Amis’ says that during her speech Monday she wants other students to realize that they need to continue to work hard and show others what it means to be a Highlander.

GSC Commencement will be held in in the Student Activity Recreational Center (SARC). The processional will begin Monday at 9:00 a.m. with a bagpipe player leading the way.
